Overview

The 1981–82 season saw the introduction of three points for a win and shirt sponsors. Stoke's were sponsored by Ricoh until 1985.

New manager Ritchie Barker made a good start as Stoke manager by winning the first game of the season at Arsenal. However by January the team had slipped into the bottom six and were out of both cups. Adrian Heath had departed for Everton and Dave Watson joined from Southampton. Mike Doyle fell out with Ritchie Barker and left for Bolton and Manchester United midfielder Sammy McIlroy joined the club to aid the relegation battle. Stoke managed to stay up by just two points finishing 18th with 44 points.
